Yantai Hill Park

Yantai Hill Park is the hilltop consulate district, a compact area of 19th-century foreign buildings overlooking the harbor and the bay. The buildings are in better condition than the description "treaty port" might suggest — several have been converted to small museums, cafes, and cultural venues, and the Chinese government has invested in their preservation as part of the city's heritage tourism.

The views from the hilltop over the harbor and across to the Changdao Islands on a clear day are among the better urban panoramas in Shandong. The mix of European architectural styles — Italian Romanesque, German timber-frame, British colonial — within a short walk makes the area genuinely interesting to architects and history enthusiasts. It is much less crowded than Qingdao's equivalent.

A story
Yantai was opened as a treaty port in 1861 after American pressure — it was a US Navy survey mission in 1860 that identified the harbor as suitable for trade. The first consulate was American, and in the decades that followed the hilltop collected consulates from Britain, France, Japan, Denmark, and Germany, each building in the style of its home country. The result is a small hillside with an accidental architectural survey of late-19th-century colonial government buildings.
