Pingyao is most easily reached by high-speed train. The Pingyaogucheng high-speed station is about 5 km from the old city and has connections to:
- Beijing (about 3.5-4 hours by high-speed)
- Xi'an (about 2.5-3 hours)
- Taiyuan (about 30-40 minutes)
- Datong (about 1.5-2 hours)
The older Pingyao station (on the slower conventional rail line) is inside the city walls and is used by slower trains on the same routes. The high-speed station requires a taxi or bus from town (15-20 minutes).
From Taiyuan, there are also frequent long-distance buses. The drive from Taiyuan by road takes about 1.5 hours on the expressway. A taxi from Taiyuan Wusu Airport costs around 200-300 RMB; the airport has connections to Beijing, Shanghai, and other major cities.
Within the old city, everything is walkable. Bicycle rental is available inside the walls; pedicabs serve short distances.
