Qiao Family Compound is one of the classic courtyard-house sights outside Pingyao, about 40 kilometres to the northeast in Qi County. Built by a wealthy Shanxi merchant family, the complex turns domestic architecture into a statement of power: nested courtyards, high grey walls, carved gateways, and rooms arranged to express hierarchy as much as comfort.
It is a day-trip sight rather than part of the walled city, but it belongs naturally with Pingyao's banking history. The same merchant culture that produced Rishengchang and the city's financial houses also built these fortified family residences in the countryside. Combine it with Zhenguo Temple or Shuanglin Temple if hiring a car for the outer sights.
