Chang Family Compound is one of Shanxi's grand merchant-residence complexes, built by a wealthy family whose courtyards, halls, gardens, and carved details show the confidence of the province's banking and trading era. It is less internationally famous than Pingyao, but it belongs to the same world of commerce and courtyard architecture.
The compound is best for travelers who have already warmed to Pingyao's lanes and want to see how merchant wealth played out on a family estate scale. Give yourself time to look at the woodwork, brick carving, and spatial rhythm; the pleasure is in accumulated detail.
