Yuncheng Cooking

Yuncheng's food sits in the southern Shanxi tradition, sharing the province's noodle culture but with local variations shaped by the agricultural products of the Yellow River plain. The regional specialty is a style of braised pork with sweet potato noodles (fen tiao) in a vinegar-soy sauce, served over a base of hand-pulled noodles. The proximity to Henan across the river gives Yuncheng cooking slightly more wheat-based variety than northern Shanxi.

The city's street food scene centres on the morning market areas near the Yanhu district, with baozi, congee, and freshly fried dough sticks as standard breakfast fare. Several long-standing family restaurants around the commercial centre specialise in the local lamb and noodle combination that dominates lunch and dinner in the city.
