Yuncheng's three main attractions — the Yongle Palace murals, the Salt Lake, and the Guandi Temple at Jiezhou — each represent something distinct and worthwhile. The city is often treated as a day trip destination from Xi'an or a stop on the way through southern Shanxi, but it rewards a full day at minimum and an overnight stay if you want to see the Salt Lake colours in the right light.
