Hongya Cave

Hongya Cave (洪崖洞, Hóngyá Dòng) is a shopping and restaurant complex built into the cliff face above the Jialing River at the northern edge of Jiefangbei. Eleven storeys of traditional-style wooden buildings are stacked vertically down the cliff, connected by walkways and lifts, all dramatically lit at night. It has become Chongqing's most photographed attraction.

The complex is genuinely spectacular at night, when the red lanterns and reflections in the river create a surreal scene. Daytime visits are considerably less impressive. Inside, the development is a fairly standard mix of restaurants, souvenir shops, and teahouses, though some of the stilt architecture on the lower levels is interesting. The best views are from across the river or from the elevated pedestrian bridge at the top. Go after dark.

A story
A photograph of Hongya Cave at night — eleven storeys of wooden stilted buildings cascading down a cliff face over the Jialing River, all lit in red lanterns and neon — went viral globally and is now one of the most shared images of any Chinese city. The comparison to the magical bathhouse in Miyazaki's Spirited Away is irresistible. Chongqing's tourism authority was reportedly caught off guard by the scale of the attention.
