Jiefangbei is the main shopping district, with major department stores and the flagship outlets of Chinese and international brands concentrated in the pedestrian zone around the Liberation Monument. The Guanyinqiao area in Jiangbei is the other major commercial centre, with a newer and slightly less touristy selection.
For local specialities, look for Chongqing's famous mala (spicy numbing) seasonings, pickled vegetables, and baijiu spirits. Ciqikou ancient town has the best concentration of shops selling local food products and souvenirs, though quality varies. The wholesale markets around Shimen Daojie stock everything a Chongqing kitchen needs, including dried chilies by the kilogram, Sichuan peppercorns in their various grades, and the tallow-based hotpot base in blocks.
