Red Crag Village

WWII-era Communist offices where Zhou Enlai lived and worked

During the Second United Front against Japan, Chongqing served as the wartime capital of the Republic of China, and the Communist Party maintained a delegation here to coordinate with the Kuomintang government. Red Crag Village (红岩村, Hóng Yán Cūn) was its base — a compound of simple buildings on a hillside outside the city where Zhou Enlai, Ye Jianying, Deng Yingchao, and other senior figures lived and worked between 1939 and 1946. The buildings have been preserved and the site now operates as a museum documenting this period of awkward but necessary alliance. Exhibits include period furniture, photographs, and documents. It is a quieter and more reflective site than the better-known WWII massacre memorials in the city.
