Stilwell Museum

The Stilwell Museum is housed in the villa that served as the residence and headquarters of General Joseph Stilwell during his time in Chongqing in the early 1940s. Stilwell commanded American forces in the China-Burma-India theatre and served as Chiang Kai-shek's chief of staff — a relationship that eventually ended in Stilwell's recall to Washington.

The museum is small but well-curated, with period photographs, documents, and personal effects. It gives a distinctly American perspective on the Chongqing wartime experience, complementing the Chinese-focused exhibitions at the Red Crag Village. The villa itself, with its garden and the surrounding streets, has a quiet, time-capsule quality.

A story
General Joseph "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell was the senior American commander in the China-Burma-India theatre of World War II and served as Chiang Kai-shek's chief of staff — a famously contentious relationship. Stilwell's personal diaries reveal his contempt for Chiang in terms so colourful that the diaries remained classified for decades after the war. His Chongqing residence is preserved as one of the city's more intimate wartime memorials.
