The Three Natural Bridges (天生三桥, Tiānshēng Sānqiáo) is a karst landscape of extraordinary scale about 200 kilometres east of Chongqing in Wulong County. Three enormous natural stone bridges span a deep river gorge, each with an arch large enough to shelter a small village. The site was formed by the collapse of a series of underground caverns, leaving the arch spans intact above the canyon.
The site is part of the South China Karst UNESCO World Heritage property. Getting there involves a cable car descent into the canyon and a walking tour among the bridges and their waterfalls. The combination of scale, weird geology, and the lush subtropical vegetation clinging to the canyon walls is genuinely spectacular. Most visitors combine it with the nearby Furong Cave, one of China's finest show caves. Allow a full day and book transport from Chongqing in advance.
