The Venetian Macao

The Venetian Macao is the centrepiece of the Cotai Strip — a vast replica of Venetian architecture housing the largest casino floor in Macau, a 15,000-seat arena, over 400 shops, and enough restaurants to fill a week. It is also genuinely surreal: gondoliers pole down indoor canals under a painted sky that is always the blue of a Venetian afternoon, regardless of the hour or the weather outside. The artifice is total and entirely deliberate.

Whether this counts as a sight is a matter of taste. As a specimen of 21st-century excess it is unmatched. The casino floor is one of the biggest in the world; the shopping mall is so large that walking it end-to-end requires twenty minutes of purposeful walking. Most visitors wander in to gawp even if they have no intention of gambling. The arena hosts major concerts and sporting events throughout the year.

A story
When the Venetian opened in 2007 it was briefly the largest casino in the world by gaming floor area, surpassing the original Venetian in Las Vegas. The Cotai Strip that surrounds it was entirely reclaimed land — in 2001 it was a shallow channel between Taipa and Coloane islands. The speed of the transformation from water to sprawling resort landscape remains one of the more extraordinary feats of modern construction.
