Taipa divides sharply between the old village — one of the most pleasant corners of Macau — and the Cotai Strip, a high-density strip of casino megacomplexes built on reclaimed land. The two halves are genuinely different experiences and together they give a decent picture of what Macau has become in the 21st century. Most visitors who come for the casinos miss the village entirely; that is their loss.
