Tsechen Monastery Ruins

About 5 km northwest of Gyantse, the ruins of Tsechen Monastery sit in a remote valley away from the main tourist circuit. The monastery was one of the most important in the region before the Cultural Revolution reduced it to rubble — only partial restoration has since taken place.

What remains is atmospheric rather than instructive: scattered walls, the outlines of former chapels, a few restored shrines. The walk or drive out from town passes through working agricultural land — barley fields, yak herders, stone-walled farmhouses — that gives a clearer sense of rural Tibetan life than anything around the monastery complex in town.

The ruins are seldom visited and require a separate short detour from the main Gyantse sites. Ask your guide to arrange transport; it is not easily walkable from town.
