Cherchen's appeal is for the historically curious rather than the sightseer. The town sits in one of the archaeologically richest parts of the southern Taklamakan, where extreme aridity has preserved remains from the Bronze Age through the Silk Road era. The town museum and the Molcha River petroglyphs are the main draws; the Zaghunluq cemetery site gives context for the famous mummies now in Ürümqi.
