Jama Mosque

The Jama Mosque in Hotan — one of the largest mosques in southern Xinjiang — is built in the Central Asian style that characterises the great mosques of the region: a large courtyard shaded by ancient trees, a prayer hall with a flat wooden ceiling supported by carved columns, and minarets in the local tradition rather than the pointed Ottoman style more familiar in the west. Friday prayers draw hundreds of worshippers from across the city, filling the courtyard with a crowd that spills out onto the surrounding streets.

The mosque's position in the old city places it at the heart of Hotan's Uyghur commercial and social life. The streets immediately around it are lined with nut sellers, dried-fruit stalls, and small workshops making the copper and brassware that form a steady background to the sound of the bazaar. Non-Muslim visitors are generally welcome outside of prayer times; dress modestly and ask before entering the prayer hall.
