Kuqa's main draws are outside the modern town: the Kizil Caves an hour west, the ruined ancient cities buried in the desert, and the old Uyghur quarter with its bazaar and mosque. Plan at least two days to cover the major sites properly — the Kizil Caves alone deserve a full morning.
