Sayram Lake

Sayram Lake is the largest alpine lake in Xinjiang, covering about 454 square kilometres at an elevation of 2,073 metres. It is brilliantly blue in the manner of high-altitude lakes where cold temperatures and high transparency produce intense colour, and the surrounding landscape of bare ridgelines, grassland, and distant snow peaks frames it without interruption. The scale is larger than most visitors expect from photographs.

The eastern shore, where the G30 expressway and G312 highway run, is the most accessible and gives immediate views over the water. Walking any distance along the shore away from the road reveals the pastoral character of the place: grazing horses, Kazakh yurts pitched in good positions above the waterline, the silence that comes from being above the treeline with no significant habitation. The wildflowers in June and early July — covering the grassland margins in a range of colour that depends on the season and the altitude — are the reason that many visitors make the specific journey here rather than simply passing through.

In summer, a circuit bus runs around the lake, and horse riding can be arranged with the Kazakh families camped on the south and west shores. Outside July and August, the lake is quiet enough that the pastoral experience is entirely unmediated by tourism.

A story
Sayram means "blessing" or "good wishes" in Kazakh, a name that reflects the lake's role in Kazakh pastoral tradition as a place of abundance: good grass, fresh water, summer grazing. The Kazakh families who bring their animals here each summer are following a pattern established over many generations, and the lake's character as a place of cultural continuity is as important as its scenery.
