Yining airport has regular flights to Ürümqi (about 1 hour) and less frequent connections to other Chinese cities. High-speed trains now connect Yining to Ürümqi in 5–6 hours, a journey that passes through the Guozigou valley and Sayram Lake. By road, the most scenic route to Ürümqi goes east through Guozigou and past Sayram Lake, a drive of 7–9 hours. Buses run this route daily. From Kazakhstan, the border crossing at Khorgos is 90 kilometres west of the city and open to third-country tourists.
