June and July are the peak months for Yining and the Ili Valley: the lavender is in bloom, the Nalati Grasslands are green and full of wildflowers, and the light on the Tian Shan is extraordinary. The Kazakh nomads are in their summer pastures and the valley is at its most productive and beautiful. August is hotter and the peak tourist season brings crowds to the main scenic areas. Spring (April–May) is excellent for the blossom on the fruit orchards and fewer crowds. Winter is cold and some mountain roads close, but the valley is functional and the city is quiet.
