Beytullah Mosque

The Beytullah Mosque is one of the main mosques in central Yining, serving the city's substantial Uyghur Muslim population. The building combines Central Asian Islamic architectural traditions with some local adaptations — a wide, shaded courtyard, a wooden-columned prayer hall, and minarets that are visible from several blocks in any direction.

The mosque sits near the centre of the city and is active throughout the day, with the main prayers drawing a congregation from the surrounding mixed neighbourhood of Uyghur, Kazakh, and Hui residents. The area around it has the character of the old bazaar quarter: small food stalls selling Uyghur bread and lamb skewers, the sound of Uyghur music from workshops, and the smell of cumin that follows you through this part of town.

Visitors are welcome outside of prayer times; dress modestly and remove shoes before entering the prayer hall.

A story
Yining was the site of a major uprising in 1944 known as the Ili Rebellion, which established the short-lived East Turkestan Republic with Soviet support. The republic lasted until 1949 when it was absorbed into the People's Republic. The mosques of Yining that survived this period bear witness to the city's complex recent history — caught between Soviet, Chinese, and Uyghur claims on its identity and future.
