Naigu Stone Forest

Naigu Stone Forest sits about 9 kilometres northeast of the main park zone and receives a fraction of the visitor numbers, which immediately changes the character of the experience. The darker, taller columns rise from relatively flat ground with scrub vegetation between them, and the sense of scale is more apparent than in the main zone where the density compresses everything. Some individual formations here reach 40 metres — equivalent to a twelve-storey building.

The access road from the main entrance makes Naigu a natural addition to a full-day visit, and the UNESCO heritage status has improved the paths and interpretive material without removing the wildness that distinguishes it from the heavily managed major section. If you can only visit one part of Shilin and prefer solitude to convenience, Naigu is the better choice. The morning light at this darker stone produces a completely different visual experience from the pale grey of the main forest.

A story
"Naigu" means "ancient black" in the Sani Yi language, and the name describes the rock precisely: the stone here is a darker dolomitic limestone that weathers to a charcoal grey rather than the paler colour of the main forest. The formations are also taller and more isolated — single columns rising to 40 metres from a flat base rather than the tightly packed maze of the main zone. UNESCO included Naigu in its 2007 World Heritage designation specifically because its geology differs from the more famous sections.
