Jiangbei Cafe District

The compact streets of the Jiangbei old foreign quarter have accumulated a cluster of independent cafes and coffee shops that take advantage of the colonial building stock and the pedestrianised waterfront. The best are in converted ground floors of the 1920s commercial buildings — high ceilings, old tile floors, floor-to-ceiling windows — and serve specialty coffee that would be competitive in Shanghai or Beijing. The combination of architecture, river views, and coffee quality makes this the most pleasant place in Ningbo to spend a morning not sightseeing.

Several of the cafes have attracted an arts and creative community as secondary residents, with small gallery shows mounted in back rooms and printed material from local designers available. On weekend afternoons the cafes fill with young Ningbo residents who combine coffee with vintage shopping in the lanes behind the main waterfront — a pattern familiar from similar districts in Chinese cities, but executed here with the advantage of genuinely old buildings rather than fabricated heritage.
