St. Paul's Cathedral in the Lucheng District is one of the most visible expressions of Wenzhou's exceptional Christian community. The city has more churches per capita than almost anywhere else in China — a legacy of 19th-century missionary work that took root here so deeply that the faith spread far beyond what the missionaries themselves achieved, carried by local converts and traders through the diaspora networks that Wenzhounese merchants maintained across China and Southeast Asia.
The cathedral itself is a substantial Gothic revival structure, built in a tradition that deliberately echoes European ecclesiastical architecture. Services are well-attended; the building is a working church, not a tourist attraction, so visit respectfully and be aware of service times. The surrounding streets are a good place to explore the city's Christian heritage, which includes several other notable church buildings within a short walk.
