When to Go

Wenzhou has a humid subtropical climate. Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) are the best times — temperatures are comfortable and the Yandang Mountains are at their most scenic. Summer is hot and humid, with typhoon risk from July to September; the coast and islands are popular with Chinese tourists during the July–August peak, and accommodation prices rise sharply. Winter is mild by Chinese standards but overcast and occasionally cold; the Yandang Mountains can be foggy. The Lantern Festival in late winter (fifteenth day of the first lunar month) is celebrated enthusiastically in Wenzhou with traditional lantern displays along the Ou River waterfront.
