Nissi Beach

Ayia Napa's most famous beach — turquoise water, white sand, connected to an islet

Nissi Beach is the most famous and most photographed beach in Ayia Napa and one of the most popular in the entire Mediterranean. The combination of powder-white sand and shallow turquoise water is genuinely exceptional — the kind of beach that looks too good to be real. It is connected to a small rocky islet by a narrow sandbar, which makes it recognisable in aerial photos. The beach holds EU Blue Flag status and the water quality is reliably excellent.

In summer it is extremely busy, with sun loungers, beach bars, and water sports operations covering most of the sand. The atmosphere is lively and social rather than peaceful. If you want it quieter, arrive before 10am or come in May or October when the crowds thin out. The beach is about 3 km west of Ayia Napa town centre — walkable or easily reached by bus.

A story
The name "Nissi" means "island" in Greek — the beach gets it from the small rocky islet connected to the shore by a narrow sandbar, which you can walk across at low tide. The islet is largely bare rock with a few wind-bent trees, but it is a nice place to sit and look back at the beach from a bit of distance. The beach itself has been at the centre of Ayia Napa's tourist industry since the 1980s, and has managed to remain genuinely beautiful despite everything.
