About 6 km east of Girne stands Belapais Abbey, a 12th-century Gothic monastery built during the Lusignan period. The complex is arranged around an inner courtyard containing the church, refectory, and monks' dormitory. The refectory, built by King Hugh IV of the Lusignan dynasty, is considered one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Cyprus. From the north wall's windows there are sweeping views of the sea against the Taurus peaks of Anatolia.
