Kyrenia Castle

Medieval harbour castle housing a 2,300-year-old shipwreck museum

Kyrenia Castle dominates the northeastern edge of the old harbour. Byzantine in origin, it was substantially expanded by the Lusignans and later reinforced by the Venetians before falling to the Ottomans in 1570. The castle contains the Shipwreck Museum, which houses the remains of a Greek trading vessel from around 300 BC — one of the oldest ships ever recovered from the seabed.
