Kyrenia Range

Limestone mountain ridge above Girne with walking trails and medieval castles

The Kyrenia Range — Beşparmak in Turkish, meaning Five Fingers — runs along the northern coast of Cyprus immediately behind Girne, rising sharply from the coastal plain to peaks above 1,000 metres. The mountains are limestone, with forest of pine and cypress in the higher sections. Walking trails cross the range; the most dramatic stretch is around the crags of Five Finger Mountain itself, where the rock formations are visible from the coast.

St Hilarion Castle, about 12 km west of Girne, sits on a ridge at 732 metres and looks over both the northern and southern sides of the island. Buffavento Castle, further east and higher, is more ruined but more remote. Both are reached by road from the Kyrenia Pass highway.
