St Hilarion Castle clings to the Kyrenia Range above the coast, a ruined Byzantine and Lusignan fortress with some of the best views in northern Cyprus. The climb from the car park passes the lower defences before reaching the royal rooms and broken upper walls.
Go for the setting as much as the history. On a clear day you can look down over Kyrenia and the sea, while the steep path and military-zone surroundings make the castle feel far removed from the harbour below.
