Getting There

By air. Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport (DIL) sits about 7 km west of the centre. Direct flights connect Dili with Darwin (Airnorth), Bali (Citilink), and Singapore (a Singapore Airlines subsidiary). Schedules are thin — typically one flight a day from each origin, sometimes fewer in shoulder season. Book early.

By land. Two overland border crossings link Timor-Leste with Indonesian West Timor: Batugadé (the main crossing, on the north coast road via Atambua) and Salele (on the south coast). A direct daily bus runs Kupang–Dili in roughly twelve hours. Visas on arrival are available at both crossings for most nationalities for USD 30.

By sea. No regular passenger ferries serve Dili from outside the country. The fast ferry Berlin Nakroma runs across the strait to Atauro Island and on to Oecusse (the country's exclave inside Indonesian West Timor).

Visa. Most visitors get a 30-day visa on arrival at the airport or land borders for USD 30. Bring exact cash in dollars.

Taxi from the airport is fixed-rate USD 10 into the centre; agree the fare before getting in.
