Pertamina Pier Dive Site

Pertamina Pier, on the western edge of Dili Bay, is one of the more remarkable shore dives in Asia: a working fuel pier whose concrete pilings are encrusted with soft corals, gorgonians, and a dense population of macro life. You walk in from the beach a few metres west of the pier and swim out along the pilings.

The dive is shallow (5–20 m) and easy, suitable for beginners or as a long second dive. Highlights include schooling razorfish, frogfish, rhinopias when you are lucky, and pygmy seahorses on the fans. Several Dili-based operators run guided dives here daily; do not attempt it without checking shipping movements first.

A story
The pier was built in the late 1990s to offload fuel for the Indonesian-Portuguese oil company Pertamina. Within a decade of the company's withdrawal, the pilings had grown a coral garden dense enough to draw divers from across Southeast Asia.
