Karamchedu

Karamchedu is a village about 15 km north-west of Chirala that carries a significant and painful place in modern Andhra history. In July 1985 it was the site of a violent attack on the Dalit community by members of the Kamma caste, in which six people were killed and many more injured. The massacre became a landmark moment in the Dalit rights movement in Andhra Pradesh, mobilising protests across the state and leading to the founding of organisations that would become central to Dalit political activity.

A memorial in the village commemorates those who died. Visiting requires some intention — Karamchedu is not a tourist stop — but for those interested in caste politics and the history of the Dalit movement in southern India, the village and its memorial have genuine significance. The road from Chirala passes through productive agricultural land typical of coastal Andhra.
