Andhra Pradesh weaving town on the Bay of Bengal, known for Chirala sarees and fishing beaches
Chirala is a coastal town in Andhra Pradesh, set on the Bay of Bengal about 60 kilometres south of Guntur. It is best known for its handloom weaving industry — the town produces fine cotton fabrics, particularly the Chirala saree, a lightweight cloth sold here at prices far below what you pay in Hyderabad or Chennai. The cloth market at the centre of town gives a good sense of the working life of coastal Andhra.
The beaches east of town are long, largely undeveloped, and shared mainly with fishing communities. Chirala Beach itself is best visited in the early morning when the catch is landed and auctioned on the sand. Suryalanka Beach, 12 km south, is cleaner and more accessible for swimming between October and March.
About 15 km to the north-west lies Karamchedu, a village with a significant and painful place in modern Andhra history as the site of the 1985 caste massacre that galvanised the Dalit rights movement in the state. South of town, Vetapalem sits at the mouth of the Gundlakamma River and has a quiet estuary that attracts wading birds in winter.
Chirala is not set up for tourism in any organised way. There are basic hotels near the railway station and the market, but no luxury options. That is precisely its character: an honest small city where daily life revolves around weaving and fishing rather than visitors.
Guide
Getting There
Chirala is on the main Chennai–Kolkata railway line, served by numerous express and passenger trains in both directions. The railway station is centrally located and most trains stop here, making it straightforward to arrive from Vijayawada (around 3 hours), Chennai (4–5 hours), or Hyderabad (changing at Guntur or Vijayawada). Trains from Ongole to the south stop at both Chirala and Vetapalem.
By road, Chirala is on National Highway 16 (the old NH 5), which runs along the coast between Chennai and Kolkata. Buses from Vijayawada and Guntur run frequently throughout the day. The nearest airports are Vijayawada (about 100 km north) and Tirupati (about 200 km south).

Shopping
Chirala is primarily worth visiting for its handloom textiles. The town is one of the main production centres for fine cotton sarees in Andhra Pradesh, and prices here are substantially lower than in Hyderabad or Chennai because you are buying close to the source. The Chirala Cloth Market around the main bazaar has the widest range. Look for the characteristic Chirala cotton — it is plain or simply striped, lightweight, and much more durable than its delicate appearance suggests. Sarees, dress material, and shirting fabric are all available.
For general provisions, the main market street has the usual range of vegetable vendors, spice sellers, and small provisions shops. There is nothing unusual here compared to any other small Telugu town, but the market is lively and a good place to get a feel for daily life in coastal Andhra.
