Shivaram Wildlife Sanctuary

Shivaram Wildlife Sanctuary lies about 80 kilometres from Karimnagar along the Godavari River in Mancherial district — a straightforward drive on good roads that makes it feasible as a long day trip. Established in 1978, the sanctuary covers 36 square kilometres of riverine forest mixed with teak and terminalia, and is the most accessible place near Karimnagar to see marsh crocodiles in the wild. The Godavari forms the northern boundary, and the mugger crocodiles bask on the sandy banks in the cooler months.

Beyond crocodiles, the sanctuary holds Indian leopards, sloth bears, nilgai, and blackbuck, along with peacocks, parakeets, and — if you are lucky — vultures on the cliff faces above the river. The best time to visit is between November and February. There is basic accommodation at the forest department guesthouse, though you should book ahead. Nearest rail access is Manthani station, 10 kilometres away.
