Belum Caves, about 100 km south of Kurnool near the village of Belum, are one of the longest cave systems in the Indian subcontinent. The main passage extends over three kilometres, developed by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation with staircases and lighting. The cave descends about 20 metres below ground through a sinkhole entrance, then follows a largely level passage through chambers of stalactites and stalagmites. The Musical Chamber (Saptasvarala Guha) has stalactites that produce tonal sounds when struck. Buddhist monks are known to have used the caves for meditation as far back as the 3rd century BCE.
