The most important temple in Tirupati town itself, distinct from the hill temple. The seven-storey gopuram dominates the town centre and is visible from the railway station; the temple complex inside includes shrines to Vishnu in his reclining (Bhujanga Sayana) form and to several attendant deities.
Many pilgrims include a visit to Govindaraja before or after their trip to Tirumala. The queues are far shorter than on the hill — usually 30 minutes to an hour — and the temple offers a more contemplative experience than the industrial throughput of Tirumala. Photography is prohibited inside the inner shrines. Open from early morning until late evening with breaks for ritual closings.
