The Yak Research Centre, run by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, sits a few kilometres east of Dirang at around 2,750 metres — the only institution of its kind in India. It studies yak genetics, breeding, and the conservation of the Arunachali yak. For visitors that translates to a chance to see yaks close up in pens and paddocks, which most travellers will otherwise only glimpse from a distance on the road to Tawang.
The visit is brief — there is a small information board, a few enclosures, and friendly staff who will answer questions if asked. Combine it with the hot springs on the same road. The yaks are most active and visible in the cooler months when they are kept lower; in summer many are taken up to higher pastures.
