Dakhinpat Satra sits on the southern part of Majuli near the Brahmaputra's main channel, surrounded by paddy fields. Founded in 1584, it is one of the island's four raj satras and has maintained the largest monastic community of any satra on the island. The compound is extensive: a prayer hall (namghar), residential quarters for the monks, agricultural land, ponds, and a small library of manuscripts.
The best time to visit Dakhinpat is during the Raas Leela festival in November, when the satra stages elaborate performances of Bhaona — classical Assamese drama based on the Krishna-Raas story — with monks in full costume and traditional masks. Outside of festival time, the satra is quieter, but the monks are generally willing to explain the tradition and the daily schedule of prayers to interested visitors. The position by the river means good birdwatching from the compound edges at dawn.
