Auto-rickshaws are the main means of moving around Patna. There are no proper meters, so agree the fare before you set off; short journeys within central Patna should cost 30 to 100 rupees. Cycle-rickshaws still work the side streets and the bazaars of Patna City and are the easiest way through narrow lanes.
Ola and Uber operate in the city; coverage is good in the centre and patchy on the outskirts. The Patna Metro is under construction and the first lines are due to open from 2026 onwards. Walking is fine in the early morning, less pleasant by midday because of heat and traffic. The Ganges riverfront and Gandhi Maidan area are walkable; Patna City -- the old town -- is best explored on foot once you have arrived by autorickshaw.
