The Patna High Court, established in 1916, is housed in a grand Indo-Saracenic building of red sandstone and white marble, with arched verandahs, chajja eaves, and a central dome. It sits on a tree-lined campus near the river, opposite Patna University. The building is the work of the British architect James Ransome and is considered one of the finest court buildings in India.
The High Court is a working court, so casual interior tours are not possible, but the grounds and exterior can be admired. The surrounding area, with the secretariat and the Raj Bhavan, retains some of the calm of British-era Bankipore -- a marked contrast with the rest of the city.
