Red Fort (Lal Quila)

Massive Mughal sandstone fortress on the Yamuna

The Red Fort is one of Delhi's most impressive sights. Built in red sandstone by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1648, the massive complex sits along the Yamuna river and is laid out as an irregular octagon.

The main entrance is the Lahori Gate, which opens into Chatta Chowk, a covered bazaar that once served the royal household. Inside the fort, highlights include the Rang Mahal — water-cooled apartments built for the royal women — and the Diwan-i-Aam, the hall of public audiences with its ornate marble alcove. The Diwan-i-Khas, the private audience hall, once held the legendary Peacock Throne.

A small museum inside the fort displays Mughal-era weapons, textiles, and paintings. The fort is also the site of India's Independence Day celebrations each August 15, when the Prime Minister addresses the nation from its ramparts.
