The old lighthouse at Fort Aguada, built in 1864, was the first of its kind in Asia. It is no longer in active service — a newer 1976 tower stands beside it — but the older structure is open to visitors at certain hours and the climb is short.
From the top, the view runs from the mouth of the Mandovi River back up the long sweep of Calangute Bay. Come around sunset if you can: the laterite walls of the fort below turn deep orange and the sea picks up the same colour for about twenty minutes before going slate-grey.
