Fort Aguada Jail Museum

Former Portuguese-era prison reopened as a museum of resistance.

Tucked inside the lower walls of Fort Aguada, this former central jail was decommissioned in 2015 and converted into a museum dedicated to Goa's liberation movement. The galleries trace the long, often violent transition from Portuguese rule to the modern Indian state.

The setting is half the visit. You walk through actual cell blocks, peer into solitary confinement rooms, and read panels about the men and women who passed through these gates. It is small but well done, and an easy add to a morning at the fort itself.

A story
The jail held Goan freedom fighters during the long Portuguese rule that lasted until 1961, when Indian troops finally took the territory. The cells where prisoners were held are now displays — the names and stories of the inmates are inscribed where they used to sleep.
