Margao is the main rail hub for South Goa. Madgaon railway station (the official name on timetables) sits on the Konkan Railway, which links Goa to Mumbai in the north and Mangalore and Kerala in the south. Most long-distance trains between Mumbai and Kerala stop here; the journey from Mumbai takes around 9–11 hours. Local trains connect Margao to Vasco da Gama (near the airport) and Panaji (the capital) several times daily.
By road, Margao is about 33km south of Panaji — roughly an hour by bus or taxi. The Kadamba Transport Corporation runs frequent buses from Panaji's Kadamba bus terminal. From Dabolim Airport, a taxi to Margao takes about 30–40 minutes depending on traffic. Autorickshaws serve the town centre and nearby villages; hiring one for a half-day to cover Margao and the Goa Chitra Museum in Benaulim is a practical option.
