Joseph Bar

Goa's oldest tavern, in a single tiny room on São Tomé Square

Joseph Bar — sometimes called Goa's oldest pub — has been operating in the same single room on São Tomé Square since 1932. The room itself is a converted shop, about four metres deep, with a counter at the back, half a dozen wall-mounted shelves of feni, rum, whisky, and a small fridge for beer. There is no seating to speak of.

The crowd spills out onto the cobbles. Goan feni — cashew or coconut, served neat or in a lemonade-tinged short — is the standard order. Snacks (small plates of pickled prawn, sausage, patrode) appear from the kitchen of the neighbouring restaurant when they appear at all. Open from afternoon until late; cash only.

A story
Joseph's grandfather started serving feni from the back of the same shop in 1932; the place has barely been renovated since the 1960s. The bar's tiny size has become its main selling point — the locals describe a good night as a small queue patiently standing on the cobbles outside, glasses of feni in hand, until someone else leaves and a single new arrival can squeeze in.
