Sabarmati Riverfront

The Sabarmati river forms the western edge of Gandhinagar, and the riverfront here is quieter and more natural than its more developed counterpart in Ahmedabad. The banks are wooded and the river's seasonal character — full and fast during the monsoon, slow and clear in winter — is easy to observe from the paths along the water. The stretch near Sector 9 is particularly pleasant for an evening walk.

The riverfront was always part of the original vision for Gandhinagar: the planners wanted the city to relate to the river that had been so important to Gujarat's history. The relationship is not as developed as it might be, but the wooded banks are a genuine asset in a city that is already unusually green by Indian standards.
