Gandhinagar's grid of tree-lined sectors is unusually calm for an Indian state capital, and the major attractions are well spaced across the city. Akshardham is the obvious centrepiece, but the Indroda fossil park, the botanical garden, and the riverside make for a fuller day if you want to explore beyond the temple complex. Most visitors come from Ahmedabad on a half-day trip; staying longer means you experience the city at its own unhurried pace.
