Somnath's defining sight is the Somnath Temple itself — one of India's twelve jyotirlingas, rebuilt seven times on the same spot after successive destructions. The Bhalka Tirtha nearby marks where, according to Hindu tradition, Krishna was accidentally shot with an arrow and left his mortal body. The Somnath Museum holds fragments from the medieval temple destroyed by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1026.
For those wanting to linger, the coast around Somnath is scenic in the late afternoon, and Veraval a few kilometres away has one of the largest fishing harbours on the Gujarat coast — raw and pungent, but a vivid contrast with the refined pilgrimage town up the road.
