When to Go

November to March is the core season for birdwatching, when the migratory birds are present. Peak numbers are typically in December and January; by March the geese and ducks begin to depart for their Central Asian breeding grounds. The weather is cool and clear, with occasional frost at night, making for comfortable daytime conditions.

March to June is the period when the Bathu Ki Ladi submerged temples are most visible as the reservoir level drops — making this a good time if the temples are your primary interest. Summer (July–September) brings the monsoon, which makes the roads muddier and the lake views less clear, but the fishing for rohu improves significantly during and after the rains.
